Tonite Reprise

"Originally slated to go on towards the end of the Mellon Collie album, this one was hacked off in the name of 'When is enough too much?' I had just come back from the Chicago Bulls' tragic loss to the Orlando Magic in the playoffs, and was very depressed. My voice was hoarse from so much shouting. Flood threw up his famous mikes, and I just did it live. I used my trusty Gibson acoustic, with the rusty strings." -BC (Guitar World 1/97)

Lyrics

and the embers never fade in my city by the lake
the place where I was born
as the wind-up toys wind down
muffling the sound of a life hidden underground
believe, believe in me
believe
that you can change, that you're not stuck in vain
we're not the same, we're different tonite
we'll the crucify the insincere tonite
we'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonite
the impossible is possible tonite
believe in me like I believe in you tonite

Notes

Presumably recorded on 1995-05-18 when Orlando's win over Chicago put the Bulls out of the NBA Finals.

The "Version 1" release on the 2012 MCIS deluxe re-issue is a slightly different take than the single version- most notable differences are the lack of voice cracking on the first "believe in me", and a slight variation near the very end ("tonight, tonight, ah" versus "tonight, ah"). The re-issue track is also slightly faster.
