radio banter
DJ:
This is the Smashing Pumpkins on The Wizard, WZRD Chicago.
[after Venus in Furs [Velvet Underground]]
Corgan:
Hey man, turn up the bass.
[after Snap]
DJ:
OK, that sounded really great, what were the name of those last two cuts?
Corgan:
The first one was a Velvet Underground song, 'Venus in Furs', and the second one was 'Snap'.
DJ:
Right, right, the Velvet Underground, that's off the banana LP right?
Corgan:
Right.
DJ:
Do you guys have any cassettes out or LPs that are available or anything yet?
Corgan:
We're gonna be on the Light Into Dark compilation that's being put out the record release party is tomorrow, it's five bands: Poster Children, Price of Priesthood, Gold September, Ghostswami, and us. That's tomorrow at the Metro, we are putting out our own cassette also.
DJ:
Great.
Corgan:
We haven't decided the title yet.
DJ:
Great, hey well everyone out in the listening audience call us up, feel free, call us up - 794-2861 - we'd like to hear your response, it sounds really great in here. So continue on, this is the Smashing Pumpkins playing live on WZRD Chicago.
Corgan:
We have a little request for more bass.
[Wretzky laughs]
Corgan:
Just a little request.
[after East]
Corgan:
Yeah.
DJ:
That was hot, that was really hot, what was the name of that one?
Corgan:
There's no title to it yet.
Wretzky:
'The Rock Song'.
Corgan:
'Mommy'.
Iha:
It's called, uh.. I wrote the song.
Corgan:
'Children of the World Part 3'.
Wretzky:
'Singing Out of Tune'.
Iha:
'Opus of the Nations'.
Corgan:
'Singing Out of Tune'.
Wretzky:
Yeah [laughs] that's more like it.
Corgan:
Uh, uh, uh, uh.. so...
Iha:
You want us to do more?
DJ:
Yeah of course, you guys sounded really great on your own man, let your own man say 'how does it sound over the air?'
Guy:
Great, it's great.
DJ:
Alright, that's your own man, it sounds really great, believe us, and once again I just want to tell the audience, if you're just tuning in you're listening to a live performance on the air right now by the Smashing Pumpkins, and why don't you plug that show again tomorrow and the record and everything?
Corgan:
Oh yeah, by the way, we'll be playing at the Cabaret Metro tomorrow night.
Iha:
And we open up for That Petrol Emotion next Friday with Voice of the Beehive.
[guitar noise]
Corgan:
Uh-oh... this is called 'Cinnamon Girl'.
[after Cinnamon Girl [Neil Young]]
Corgan:
Ouch!
DJ:
Yeah, that sounded really great, I think Neil Young would be proud to say the least.
Corgan:
Thank you, man.
DJ:
Yeah, I really liked that a lot. Hey, you- now, I hope you've got more, 'cause we'd love to hear it. You know another half hour if you've got it, at least, you know.
Corgan:
Well, we've got some more, but we've got to take it easy on my voice, I'm just a little sick.
DJ:
Yeah, OK, plus tomorrow night, right, right, well do some instrumentals.
[Chamberlin plays instrumental pastiche]
DJ:
You're listening to the Smashing Pumpkins playing live on WZRD Chicago.
Corgan:
Alright we're gonna regroup, hold on a sec... talk a lot, man.
DJ:
And they got on the air 'cause I saw them play live and they sounded really great, so hopefully you'll go out and see them play live. They're playing tomorrow night with 4 or 5 other bands at the Cabaret Metro, and as they said they're opening for That Petrol Emotion so that ought to be a really great show. Erm, also, listen, if you're in a local band and you want to get your chance at playing live on WZRD, what you do is send us a cassette, it's that simple, send us a cassette or a record, it doesn't matter, to: WZRD, 5500 North St Louis Avenue, Chicago IL 60625-4699, it's real simple and right now we want.. Like I said, we're listening to the Smashing Pumpkins playing live on the air and we'd like to hear from you, it sounds really great, that Neil Young song that they just did was live, that was not a recording. What you're hearing is live- I know it sounds really great, but it is live! Call us up, 794-2861 is the number, we'd love to hear from you.
Corgan:
Alright, this is an old song called 'There It Goes'.
[after Nothing & Everything]
Corgan:
Hey, man.
DJ:
Wow I liked that one a lot, I really like that one a lot. Hey we're getting some really great audience response too.
Wretzky:
Oh, no.
DJ:
But we'd like to hear some more. 794-2861 is the number here, this is a live performance by the Smashing Pumpkins. They're playing down here on your radio, it's no charge but tomorrow night go see them by all means, they're playing with 4 other fine bands for their record release party and not only that, next week they're backing up That Petrol Emotion, isn't that right?
Corgan:
That is correct.
DJ:
That's great man, that's really great, local music hitting it big and we're doing live on WZRD Chicago with the Smashing Pumpkins.
Corgan:
Shall we play again?
DJ:
Hey man, by all means.
[after Under Your Spell]
DJ:
Alright, hey listen, I got a call from a guy out there named Wolf, he says it sounds really great and he's looking forward to seeing you under a howlin' moon or something like that but he's looking forward to seein' you and...
Corgan:
Thanks Wolf.
DJ:
You sound great man.
Wretzky:
Wolfie, thanks Wolfie.
DJ:
794-2861 is the number here, and you're listening to the Smashing Pumpkins, they lugged down all their equipment and they want to hear some response, and we want to hear some response. They're doing this for free so call us up and let us know what you think, 794-2861 is the number here. Have you got some more for us?
Corgan:
Yeah we got a couple more, we're gonna try a new song.
Wretzky:
No!
Corgan:
Against the protestations of the bands.
Wretzky:
No, no.
Corgan:
This is called 'Rhinoceros'.
Wretzky:
No.
Corgan:
Yes, yes, yes.
Guy:
Is that that real slow one?
Corgan:
That's that real slow one, yeah.
[after Rhinoceros]
Iha (?):
Very good, very good, very good, very good.
Corgan:
Alright.. oh here he comes again, I see the light on, never mind you can come on and talk, we're only gonna do two more songs now.
DJ:
I wanna tell you that Fran from Jack Scratch, a good buddy of mine and one of the great guitar players in Jack Scratch just called up to say you guys sound really great, and we're getting some other positive calls too. 794-2861, feel free to call in by all means, this band is playing live, the Smashing Pumpkins, playing tomorrow night at the Metro and they're playing tonight live right here on WZRD Chicago.
[after Sun]
Corgan:
And the last song is called.. as soon as James re-tunes.
DJ:
Let me just say one thing, you guys have got a lot of fans in the audience, they're really calling up definitely and they really like the sound, they really like the sound a lot. Hey, why don't you plug the show one more time before you leave?
Corgan:
Alright, the show is tomorrow night it starts at ten thirty, there's five bands, we're the fourth band, not that you should skip anyone else but we'll probably be going on around twelve thirty [laughter]. You wanna show up late and be cool, you know.
Wretzky:
If you gotta work.
Corgan:
If you're one of the faithful you'll be able to hear this little pop number that we've written up for everyone. Uno, dos, tres, quatro.
[after Spiteface]
Corgan:
Thank you.
DJ:
Hey, that was a really great show, hey that's for coming down everybody.
Corgan:
Thank you Joe Gaza.
DJ:
Hey, thank you for coming down, hey the radio station and Sean and Greg did a really fine job here, definitely. Thanks again for coming down, once again the Smashing Pumpkins playing live tomorrow night and backing up That Petrol Emotion, that should be some really great shows, hey, break a leg tomorrow night.
Corgan:
Thank you very much.
DJ:
