1988-11-19 - Annie May Swift Hall; Evanston, IL, US
interview
Annc:
Introduce yourselves
Corgan:
I'm, I'm Billy, I'm the lead singer and guitar player.
Iha:
I'm James, guitars.
Wretzky:
My name's D'arcy and I play the bass.
Annc:
Very good, you guys're, really really good at this microphone stuff,
Corgan:
And, uh-
Annc:
I tell 'em to lean into the microphone and they really do, as opposed to most of the-
Corgan:
And, uh- Jimmy, the drummer, is in Joliet. We have a drummer now.
Annc:
Oh, OK.
Corgan:
'Cause, a lot of people who saw us in the beginning, saw us with a drum machine, but we finally got a drummer, so...
Annc:
No, but you played today with a drum machine.
Corgan:
Yeah, 'cause we just thought it would sound a lot better.
Annc:
Yeah, yeah, that's something that's kinda difficult to deal with in our completely minimal studio in the other room. Umm, so, you guys played in Milwaukee last night, you said it wasn't- too great...
Corgan:
Yeah, it was a bad gig.
Iha:
[laughs]
Annc:
But you're playing tomorrow night, at Exit.
Corgan:
We're playing tomorrow night at the Exit with the Swinging Dicks, who we played with in Milwaukee last night. They're like, kinda like, we're, we're um, tagging up with, uh, Swinging Dicks, and we're gonna try and start doing the same thing with The Crows. And, like, book gigs together, and go down this, like, you know, like champagne...
Annc:
Yeah, yeah, it probably makes it a lot easier, definitely, and bring out more people for two bands.
Corgan:
Well, it's just nice to have a lot of like, uh, you know, you bring both bands out, and that way if there's any sh-, uh, s- bad stuff that happens...
Annc:
[laughing]
Corgan:
Uh, that way, you know, we don't have any problems, we're kinda like, you know, our own little teams...
Annc:
Heeheeheeheehee!
Corgan:
Makes things easier.
Iha:
[laughs]
Annc:
OK, team effort. Um, you're listening to 89.3, WNUR-FM, Ev- Evanston/Chicago, the new music FM, and it's- 4:57, you're listening to Airplay, and that's all just- for your personal information, so you know what's going on, and we're sitting here with the Swinging D- uh, no, with the Smashing Pumpkins [laughs]
Corgan:
Can we- can we tell you about our, our soon-to-be demo?
Annc:
Oh, yeah, and ta- and talk about the, what's the, what's the deal with this, this, uh-
Corgan:
Alright yeah, um-
Annc:
this cable thing, too.
Corgan:
Today we're, we're taping a cable, uh, thing, in Addison, on Pulse Cable, but I don't know what channel it is, and I don't know when it's gonna air, but...
Annc:
But-
Corgan:
it'll be with Love & Addiction, and Eisenhowers.
Annc:
Well, when you, when you go down- you're doing this after you leave here?
Corgan:
Well, as soon as we get off the air.
Annc:
Well, as soon as you get down there, tell 'em, "Call Octavia, WNUR, and tell her what the heck this is all about," because I wanna know-
Corgan:
I've heard-
Annc:
so, if all these local bands are gonna be taping on the air...
Corgan:
Jimmy, Jimmy, our drummer's done it, um, with a guy named Dave, or he's done stuff with him, and I guess they do very, you know, like 16-track audio, and-
Annc:
Wow...
Corgan:
they use 4 cameras, and they- it's all for free, and it's supposed to be very good quality.
Annc:
Neat, that's really great. And some, so is it like, is it like a, do you think it's kinda like an MTV-type thing, like a music video show-
Corgan:
I heard-
Annc:
...and they slip 'em in every once in a while-
Corgan:
(trying to interrupt) I've heard-, I've-, I've heard-
Annc:
...or it's like a local.. video show..
Corgan:
I- Y'know, I've heard, I've heard cheesy things and I've heard good things, I mean- there's not much you can expect when you go in for free and-
Annc:
Yeah [laughing]
Corgan:
and, um- free audio, and free tape. I mean, it might be a nice promotional thing, and it might be, just be nice to have it on TV, I don't know
Annc:
Yeah...
Corgan:
It'd be nice to, for all my um, old high school pals that didn't like me to-
Annc:
[laughing]
Corgan:
see me on TV.
Annc:
Hahahaha! So that's why you're in this band-
Corgan:
Yeah, and uh-
Annc:
revenge, yeah.
Corgan:
Um, we- we don't have an, uh- like, the tape we sent you was a, 4-track demo, like, bedroom stuff. But, umm, uh... the um, I shouldn't say his name, but um, this guy from Elektra really likes the band, and... he's gonna pay for our demo.
Annc:
Neat!
Corgan:
So, we're gonna be doing that, like, probably the first week of December, before he goes on the road with Metallica.
Iha:
Tsch!
Annc:
[laughing] There you go, I see a definite connection between you guys and Metallica there!
Corgan:
Yeah...
Annc:
Hahaha!
Corgan:
Yeah, well... he's- he's all connected to all like-
Iha:
[mumbles something]
Corgan:
Yeah.. Oh yeah, and- and we're opening for Jane's Addiction next Wednesday at the Metro.
Annc:
Oh, that's right, I almost forgot about that-
Corgan:
Yeah...
Annc:
yeah, that's a really big show.
Corgan:
Yeah, we were-
Annc:
Ummm, Jane's Addiction, all ages show.
Corgan:
We were quite- the lucky puppies with that.
Annc:
Hahahahaha! Ummmm, yeah, that's Wednesday before Thanksgiving, for those of you that aren't up on what's goin' on around here... all you lazy bums that don't know what's goin' on... Let's give away a pair of tickets for your show, tomorrow night, how's that?
Corgan:
That sounds nice.
Annc:
Does that sound, sound nice, and good, and happy?
Corgan:
Yeah-
Annc:
