On Getting Backstage - Jason P.
Listessa & The Pumpkins
1996-10-09

i've been reading over(and over) the posts saying, " i want backstage
passes" and i'm just trying to figure out why. maybe i need to relate my
experience to you all to open up my point.

on feb 8 i went to an interview thing here in seattle with billy and
d'arcy. after they were interviewed by us in the audience(about 75 of us
or so) and the radio went back to their normal shit music, we all
got in a line with our one thing to get autographed and waited our turn.
finally, after about 10 minutes i got to the front. first d'arcy signed
the back of my today 7", without even looking up. then billy did, and
said thanks for coming. then i was hustled out, into the seattle night.
before i was even out in the rain they had forgotten me, just another fan.
of course.

see, the thing was, i could NEVER have explained to them, even if i was
given hours, how much their music has meant to me and changed me. it
would not be possible. instead, afterwards, i felt this empty, weird
feeling.

i wished i would have never met them. i prefer that line between audience
and performer because, in reality, no matter how many times you get
backstage, no matter how many times you follow them around, no matter how
many times you interrupt their night on the town, no matter how many times
you bug them, they'll never remember you and they'll never know about you
what you know about them. you are a type. you are another fan. let
yourself be more than that. leave them alone. i know i will. if i ever
saw any of them in any approachable position i would NOT go up to them and
try to tell them anything. it's trite. it's been done. you could say
nothing that hasn't already been said, so why don't you simply say
nothing? they are people, tired after the show, going through motions
even I wouldn't go through on a nightly basis. they aren't heroes, they
aren't your savior. they are people. why do you "worship billy," as i've
heard many of you say many times? worship yourself. you are the hero..

scattered 1:20 am kisses,
