Heroin's Toll - Aaron Tiensivu
Death of Jonathan, Firing of Jimmy
1996-07-19

I think we've seen an end of an era.

The one thing that always stood out in my mind about SP is that the drumming
took them one more step up above everyone else.. it's going to be a bitch to
find someone with such a jazz/etc background that Jimmy had. Even just
recently, like at the 3 Michigan shows, he was putting in different fills for
different songs, every night. Two songs that stand out in my mind that were
above the album's versions were 'F.U. (Ode to no-one)' and 'Thru the Eyes of
Ruby'. The drumming on the latter song at the Saginaw show floored me.. I
totally loved the extended jam. Nearly cried. I really wish someone had
recorded the Saginaw and State Theatre show.. The 2 times I saw him and Jonathon
do the extended Silverfuck, was mind blowing. Totally in sync, totally
professional, totally cool. Learning about his dismissal put a dark cloud over
my day, much like the news about Jon did a while ago.

People were making comparisions of Guns and Roses and Smashing Pumpkins.. well,
here's an eerie one. Both bands kicked out their original drummers for heroin
addiction..

I'm kind of worried though. There were reports, from the SD era, that the
whole band was using.. and someone mentioned something about a interview
recently where they joked around that "the whole band was on heroin again".
It would break my heart if I found out that Darcy, James and Billy were also
partakers.

What is SICK, in an article I read.. the "Red Rum" variety that Jimmy/Jon took
in NY is in very high demand now BECAUSE "someone famous died on it". I'm not
making it up.. I'll dig it out and post it soon. [Red Rum is murder backwards]

I just thought of a bad joke..
Have an all girl band, and call them the Heroins..
Not funny, I know.. but it slightly amused me for a moment. :)

I think I'm going to put up a web page on all the different bands that heroin
has affected. Just off the top of my head:

Johnny Winter [early 70s, not now]
Rick Derringer [ditto]
Guns n' Roses [drummer]
Thin Lizzy [main songwriter/bassist - SP covered one of their songs,
                    "Dancing in the Moonlight"]
Nirvana [singer]
Hole [singer/bassist died]
Germs [singer]
Sex Pistols [Sid Vicious]
Sublime [singer]
Blind Melon [singer]
Alice in Chains [singer, and original bassist]
Nine Inch Nails ["Hurt" is about Heroin]
Dink
A Seattle band I forgot the name of [singer from the band died, and "Mother
Love Bone" was a tribute to him/the band]
Ministry [Al is a well-known drug-abuser]
Stone Temple Pilots [old news]
Depeche Mode [singer]
Candlebox
Red Hot Chili Peppers [early guitarist died, singer is a BIG junkie (part of
the reason they cancelled their summer tour)]
Jane's Addiction [Perry & Dave, who also was Jimmy's sponsor]
Janis Joplin
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Breeders

Bands I suspect might be on it:

Butthole Surfers [there were reports that they were the ones that got the
singer of STP into it]

Ash [listen to the lyrics of the 1st song on the '1977' album]
["Here comes a nod, it's comin' on, inside your veins. . ."]
[That is a great album by the way! WALL OF SOUND!! ]
Everclear [I've read reviews of their live shows and it gets mentioned]
"They would be a good band if their singer didn't indulge in
                   the china white."
Marilyn Manson [singer has been hospitalized numerous times for it]

Just looking this list over makes me ill..
