Eyewitness Account of the Concert - David Garry
Dublin Tragedy
1996-05-13

Hi I was one of the many people that was at the dublin concert on saturday
night.A year ago the pumpkins played here in the SFX in dublin which is
a venue that holds about 800 people and they played for two nights
to sell out crowds. The concerts were amazing and the band claimed that
those two shows were probably the best shows they had ever played
crowdwise and this is true as they have told several interviews since
that they were really looking forward to coming to back to dublin.
Saturday night was not a concert to remember...I have been at 90000
people REM and U2 concerts..I have been to really really rough nirvana and
pearl jam type concerts..but I have never experienced anything like
that concert in terms of roughness..
Filter were the support band that night and when they came of there
was a large movement and surge of people twowards the front.I was there
with my girlfriend..she isn't a pumpkins fan as she never really heard
them until recently but I went to a pumpkins gig a month ago and I knew
from people that I talked to there that the pumpkins are incredible live
even if you don't really know the songs so I took my girlfriend to the
concert in the hope that she would enjoy it despite the fact that she
doesn't know a lot of material..We stayed a good half way back from the front
as filter came on..but the pushing was so hard from behind us that by
the time the pumpkins came on we were two people in front of the barrier
that was straight in front of billy..A huge distance to move in a few minutes
at a packed concert..
When the band did come on the crowd went half crazy..it was pretty rough
but not moshing more so much pushing that you couldn't breath..they were
a lot of crowdsurfers too(later on in the concert billy got so fed up with
the crowdsurfers hurting people that he said that if the security caught
anyone coming over the top that they should be fucked outside)..
the first two songs were pretty rough but when Zero came on the place went
crazy..the surge from behind was incredible..half way through the song
myself and about 50 others fell down straight in front of the stage
and the thing was that people weren't giving us hand up and they way
we had fallen its impossible to get up unless you can get someone to
give you a hand..I was on top of a girl myself but I couldn't get up cause
just no-one was giving me a hand or anything..and while all these
people were down the crowd surfers kept jumping in on top of us..
this is when the girl was crushed..she was unable to breath for two minutes
and was pronouced brain dead by the time the ambulance came back stage
Billy stopped after they saw what was happening in that song..
If he had known then what had happened to the girl the concert would have
stopped there completly...but they stopped for a long time to let the
people get out and I myself couldn't stay there and I didn't feel safe for
my girlfriend either..I mean I went to the concert to listen to the music not
to hurt somebody..the concert continued on and the pumpkins did play well
.there was a lot of crowd surfing and it was sorta heavy but not too bad
until BWBW which made almost everybody go crazy..
The pumpkins went off after cherub rock and normally they come back on after
that song for the encore..when they came on with no instruments I knew
something was wrong and then billy informed us that a girl was seriously
hurt back stage and that they couldn't continue and how they were so freaked
out..billy was sorta crying on the drum kit then and all the band were really
upset..James had said earlier that night "It's only a rock concert its not
worth dying over"..D'arcy was freaked out by people shouting and smiling at
them to play more as theu hadn't got there moneys worth..these are the sad
uncaring mindless fuckers that I cannot stand..there is no other word for
people like that except SCUM...I didn't really think at all or mind the
concert finising early cause I understood that somebody had been really
hurt and that it couldn't continue..I felt sorta sick at the thought
that somebody had been really hurt by these fools ..it was really sad
to think that a person thay maybe I was standing beside earlier was
dying now..I sorta wanted to look around for my friends and little
brother and everyone I knew at the concert...I felt no rage at the band
cause they did the right thing but I was disgusted at the people
who wanted them to play on..
There are maybe several reasons why this happened...
1.The Point depot where the concert took place is not particularly
suitable safetywise...there are big bars in the middle of the place
that people can get squashed against.
2.There were a lot of people there that are not real pumpkin fans.
There were a lot of sepultura and metallica heads who were looking for
a good mosh ..the problem is that they all like BWBW and they were
all waiting for that but when sorta heavy stuff came on they were
really the ones that went crazy..the majority of these were the ones
that complained when the concert finished early and wanted the band
to continue playing even though somebody had been really hurt..I feel
that these are the people that used to be into that mad senseless
nirvana type thing and ever since there really isn't a nirvana
or even itr seems a pearl jam at the moment people are sorta saying
that the pumpkins are like those bands which is not true as the pumpkins
have more slower less rockier stuff than harder stuff..
3.It seemed like there was a lot of really really young people at it
.at one stage I turned around and there was a guy beside me that must have
been 11
4.People are saying that there had to have been forged tickets for the
concert as there saying that it was completly over crowded..

The facts are that it was not the pumpkins fault..hopefully they understand
that..it was more the fault of the red necks and moshers that came to
crowdsurf and hurt people..

God rest the soul of the poor girl who died..

david.
