One of the longest running projects going on in the background of Listessa is
the tribute tape. The basic idea is that musicians on the list will record
themselves doing various Pumpkins covers and then send them to a central
person who will compile them all together into a final product to be treed out
to Listessa members. This idea was attempted first in 1995 and went nowhere.
In 1996 the project was undertaken again and completed successfully.
The original Listessa tribute tape was put together by
Tim Miller and was titled
" Songs From the Magic Bus", in honor of a landmark post (which can be
found on the Quality Posts page) by one-time list member Nick Saqr.
List maintainer Karl Daher, along with list member Vince Horst, has
recently put together a follow-up tape, which has been titled " Songs
From the Magic Bus II: Listessa Refuels".
Karl is currently distributing copies of " Songs From the Magic
Bus", released in January 1997, and " Songs From the Magic
Bus II - Listessa Refuels", released in September 1998. Here are
the details on how to order:
- All sales final. I am not responsible for orders not received (ie.
money orders not received by me or cassettes not received by
you.) As well, if you don't like the tape when you receive it, give it
away as a gift. Just don't send it back to me expecting a refund. :-) This
is an at-cost distribution for the members of the Listessa mailing list
only!
- All orders must be paid by money order. No cheques will be accepted.
Money orders in US dollars can be purchased at most banks in most
countries. Please do not send a US postal money order, as I can not
cash them in Canada. Canadians can feel free to send postal money orders to
me. Naturally, Canadians (or anyone else for that matter) can send me money
orders in Canadian dollars. Please make the money orders payable to Karl
Daher. Send cash in the mail AT YOUR OWN RISK!
- The address to send the money orders to is:
Karl R. Daher
241 - 5th. Street
Morden MB R6M 1N6
CANADA
Along with your money order, please indicate your choice of tribute
tape (I, II or both), the mailing address that you want the cassette sent
to, and your e-mail address. Sending a humourous story along with your
order may speed up shipping. Then again, it might slow it down... :-)
To Listessa's non-Canadian subscribers: Sending a letter to Canada
requires EXTRA postage! Please see your postal outlet for current
rates.
- Upon receipt of money order, it will take:
up to 10 days to send a tape within Canada
up to 21 days to send a tape to the US
28+ days elsewhere (depending on where elsewhere is!)
- The prices (finally):
All prices include shipping. Any duty or tariffs occurred in your
country is extra!

Songs from the Magic Bus Tracklisting
The descriptive notes about each song are by
Tim Miller.
Side One:
- mellon collie & the infinite sadness -
(Josh Sherman) - done beautifully in the classical guitar fashion.
- disarm - (Certified Waif) - a pumpkins
classic for sure, and Certified Waif does an excellent job with it, adapting
the pumpkins approach, starting mellow and finishing with a hard edge.
- mellon collie reprise - (Flight of June) -
the ending section of "thru the eyes of ruby" seems to have a name, much to my
surprise. it's "mellon collie reprise", and it's here, the first of many
great covers from jeff*jill
- stumbleine - (Flight of June) - played great
and sung great. jeff's whispery voice fits nicely into the mood of this song.
- slunk - (Boda) - the punk version. heavy
and screamy. great for rawking out.
- i am one - (GlitzerNova) - GlitzerNova does
a wonderful job with the opening track from Gish. all the bandmembers are in
sync and it rawks beautifully.
- silverfuck - (Danny Gillispie) - danny
might be the next neil young... the wavering voice, the acoustic guitar. if
you would have told me a couple months ago that someone could pull off an
acoustic version of a song like silverfuck, i would have called you crazy, but
danny proves that it can be done beautifully, with only a guitar and a voice.
- sweet sweet - (TubeBabies) - definitely a
more complicated take on this simple pumpkins tune, with a very spacey
ending...
- crush - (Velvet Reflections) - this band
has only one month of musical experience, which amazes me, since they pull off
a great version of this old forgotten tune. bravo, VR, and keep up the good
work.
- beautiful - (Sadness) - mighell's
adventure into the land of ambience. where'd you get that wall of keyboards
mighell? ;) very dreamy. great stuff..
- lily - (Flight of June) - once again,
jeff*jill do a great job and have some fun with this one...
- 1979 - (Flight of June) - another fun one.
get ready to dance ;)
- pennies - (Sadness) - just mighell,
his guitar and his drum machine. i like the pumpkins version, and i love
mighell's.
- pulseczar - (Flight of June) - a trippy,
bordering on insane piece. it's done very well..
Side Two:
- rocket - (Paper Wings) - addition of
keyboards makes the sound fuller, and it really sounds great. Paper Wings do
a great job with the production...
- tonite, tonite - (Paper Wings) - the boys
put alot of feeling into this one. a very good version.
- rhinoceros - (Shannon Hutson & Tim Miller)
- this one is still questionable, since shannon has yet to tell me whether or
not she despises my vocals. i tried to give the vocals a 'echo-y' quality.
shannon plays great throughout, and this version is a bit more abbreviated.
- bullet with butterfly wings - (GlitzerNova)
- as much as i don't like this song (from being so overplayed last year) i
really really loved this version. the band was once again in top form and
played well.
- mayonaise - (May Choi Kennedy Greenburg) -
instrumental and very powerful, even without the vocals. a bit of
improvisation at the end.
- jupiter's lament - (Tea & Puppets) - almost
a chorus of vocals... i like it alot.
- cherub rock - (Certified Waif) - this is
also played very well, and that's all i'll say ;)
- take me down - (Flight of June) - i like
the keyboards. they give the song a dreamy quality. those of you who don't
like james' vocals should really enjoy this.
- meladori magpie - (Sadness) - what's
that stuff you have playing in the background mighell? anyway, mighell did an
excellent job with this (duh!)
- zero - (Sadness) - managed to
squeeze this on at the last minute. mighell says there's a cool noise at the
end. listen for it.
- bye june (Danny Gillispie) - danny slows it
down a bit after attacking the 8-minute epic rawkers ;) very very nice.
- farewell & goodnight - (Corduroy Pillow) -
i like this a lot. it reminds me of when the pumpkins play it live, and not
just because it's out of tune in parts ;) look for more Corduroy Pillow stuff
on future tributes (if they do something with vocals ;)
- galapagos - (Sadness) - i thought
this closed the tape very well, and once again, mighell gives a stellar
performance.
