Billy Corgan Interview with Brian Solis in March 2012 in Austin, Texas, USA.

Why Musicians Need More Than Viral Videos to Succeed – Advice for Aspiring Artists and Musicians:

As guitarist and co-founder of the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan was at the forefront of one of the most important music movements in recent history. He is not finished yet. The Pumpkins have a new album coming out on June 19th, and Corgan is splitting time between music and helping artists take back control from labels. He wants talented musicians to have more lucrative careers and to engage their fans. He notes the difficulties in keeping sustained relevance in an industry that has become a commodity and is service oriented. He is calling on fans to invest in the artists that they believe in as a way of supporting genuine talent. Corgan encourages both artists and fans to assume responsibility in the future of music and to make it into something more than just viral videos and hit singles.

Corgan believes that the music industry is currently structured to prevent artists from achieving the type of success that his band enjoyed in the 1990s. In fact, Corgan does not believe that the Pumpkins could achieve the same level of success if the band debuted today. He advises new artists to master multiple fields and to go beyond music. He believes that today's artists can use different forms of technology to create an experience that transcends multiple mediums.
